  • Ask me, I’ve done way too much stuff in this job to list it all here. I regularly do the job of community manager, web producer, technology writer, customer support, front-end development, server administration, back-end development, social media management (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, et cetera), and a bunch more.
  • In terms of web development, most of my work at Ars consists of building custom plugins for Movable Type (our publishing platform), custom internal Django applications, user-facing JavaScript features/applications, and tying all these (and several 3rd party systems) together in a seamless way.
Senior Web Developer, Stone Ward—Sept 2006 to August 2008
  • Worked with a diverse agency client list to develop intranets, micro-sites, social web applications, Facebook applications, flash games, corporate web presences, and internal tools.
  • Developed web presences and applications using a diverse number of web scripting languages including: ASP.NET (C#,VBS), Classic ASP, PHP, Python, and Cold Fusion.
  • Worked with corporate clients directly to inform and influence strategies involving “the social web.” Consulted on the usage of blogs, social networking sites, syndication, and similar technologies for use in a corporate setting.
Journalist / Copy Editor / Web Developer / Producer, Ars Technica LLC.,—2004 to August 2008
  • Managed, edited, and participated in a team of writers that built one of the most widely respected and objective sources of news concerning Apple Computer, their hardware & software, and the 3rd-party developer ecosystem surrounding the company (http://www.arstechnica.com/apple/).
  • Developed in-house web applications to improve resource efficiency using Python and Django.
  • Composed articles and reviews ranging in length from 500 to 10,000 words on varied topics ranging from transistors, spy-ware, to hybrid vehicles. Articles were written with a technical audience in mind and on extremely strict deadlines with rigorous expectations of quality and technical understanding.
RF Engineer/Programmer, T-Mobile USA—May 2004 to Sept 2006
  • Monitored, optimized, and designed the placement and specifications of existing and new cellular telephone towers.
  • Became proficient in and made use of the following industry-specific software: Mapinfo (GIS), Odyssey, Enterprise Asset, Remedy XP, Insite, Nortel, OMC-R, and advanced usage of Microsoft Excel for data analysis.
  • Familiar with and made extensive use of signal propagation theory, capacity forecasting, RF interference, and minimization thereof.
Junior Web Developer, Purdue University, CERIAS—Nov 2002 to May 2004
  • Developed several object oriented PHP class packages to drive various sections of the CERIAS website such as: a hierarchical, user-contributed directory of security links, an online calendaring system, security event tracking system, and more.
  • Ported aging PHP code-bases to efficient, well-documented, and object-oriented applications.
