Woke up at 5:45am Chilled, ate ramen 7:30am hopped on the bike with Jacqui and rode down to Lincoln Park and the just-opened-for-the-season Green City Market Bought a bunch of delicious food for dinner, watched people and dogs, laid in the grass. Watched Mayor Daley congratulate the operators of the market (it's the 10 year anniversary--just like Ars!) Stopped at Trader Joe's to pick up some items for the mashed potatoes (and wine) Chilled out at home for a while. Around 12:30pm, rode our bikes down to Division/Damen, got some sandwiches from Jimmy Johns and ate lunch in Wicker Park ...
We are Wicker Park Bucktown is an special service area1 with the following mission: to sustain and promote the prosperity and unique qualities of life of the Wicker Park/Bucktown neighborhood and commercial district, whilst preserving its diverse character for the benefit of its residents, visitors, and businesses through the wise and discerning investment of resources to enhance our public ways. They recently held a master planning open house and invited locals to give their suggestions for the area in a really fun photo format. They've uploaded the photos to Flick for anyone to browse through: WBP Open House #1 Suggestion ...
It was 60°F yesterday and it was the perfect opportunity to take Jacqui out and hit the pavement on her new bike. We rode from our place out to Lincoln Park zoo, saw all the animals and then rode down to North Avenue Beach, up and down the lakefront trail, and then took a break and snapped some photos: It was a great day. Jacqui's a little sore, but well worth it. Here's the whole Flick Set (18 photos) and a map of our photos and where they were taken.
Anyone have any idea where I can buy non-black colored Panaracer Tserv 700Cx32 tires? They come in some cool colors (pink!) but it only seems possible to get them in black stateside. Another option are these Tufo Prestige tires: However, they seem kind of expensive for something I may not end up liking too much. The state of 700Cx32 tires is pretty drab. Black, black, black. Oooh wait this model has a reflective strip! Meh. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and get some 23mm wheels and never look back. The variety of tires for that width are pretty ...
This past Saturday, Jacqui got herself a new bike. She wrote about our trip to the Village Cycle Shop in Old Town and her new bike, a Gary Fisher Wingra. While there, I picked up a wireless bike computer, because, well, I've wanted one for a while and VCS was having a Spring super sale. When I got it home, it was missing a piece. I got the piece replaced today after work and got it all hooked up. Only problem? The damn thing doesn't work! I've tried aligning the magnet in a billion different ways, moving the sensor up ...

Portland has always been an extremely bike-friendly city. It looks to me like they're taking new steps to implement a project called bike boxes. These "boxes" look like color-coded areas within car lanes that add a good bit of padding to the area directly before intersections. Check out this photo for a good illustration (more photos): Flickr photo by BikePortland.org PortlandOnline describes them thusly: The bike box is an intersection safety design to prevent bicycle/car collisions, especially those between drivers turning right and bicyclists going straight. It is a green box on the road with a white bicycle symbol inside. ...
Been messing around with our Flip a lot more. This is also my first foray into the wild world of iMovie 2008. Give me two and a half minutes and you too can make your own delicious, crispy, crunchy duck legs. Protip: pair with cheesy rice and broccoli or steamed vegetables Making crispy roast duck from Clint Ecker on Vimeo.
We left our apartment in Chicago around 6am and made it to the airport on time. We had a mini freakout when we encountered not one, but two sprawling and packed security check lines. To make matters worse, I only have an expired driver's license for identification and I was a little worried it would hold me up. I performed some ninja moves and found a tucked away security line that not many had discovered and we zipped through. My lack of non-expired identification was actually not that big of deal. They lady hassled me a little bit and then ...
Saw the link over on Buzz's blog (he's been posting a lot of good stuff!) about Forbes Traveler's best american beer bars. I decided to skip through it and I found one of my favorite spots here in Chicago! At our old apartment in Uptown, we lived within walking distance of Hopleaf and visited it quite a few times. The bar is amazing and always packed, but they make some mean bavarian-inspired food as well. If you're ever in the area, be sure to check it out! Now we live far away in Bucktown/Wicker Park, but there's a nearby place ...
The weather shot above 45F for the first time for what seems for like forever in Chicago. It's one of those days where you know that you absolutely know that you have to take advantage of it. So I decided that I was going to go on an epic (for me) bike ride around the city. It turns out that I wasn't the only person in Chicago who had the idea to go outside and enjoy the weather. When I finally got off North Ave. at Lakeshore to jump on the Lakefront Bike Trail I was greeted by literally hundreds ...
Earlier in the week, while walking past Cooking Fools (Yelp page), I noticed they were having a sale on Fat Tire and Delirium Tremens, two of my favorite beers. I didn't have any money on me at the time (walking home from the gym), but I vowed to stop in. The fact is that I had meant to stop by Cooking Fools for quite a while. They cook up a large number of extremely delicious looking meals, roast whole chickens, and baguettes fresh each day. They also sell a wide variety of tasty wines and beers, and even their own ...
Rachell notes in her post this morning that yes, it is cold here in Chicago this morning. This did not stop me from taking my normal morning bike commute into work. It's my theory that once it gets below 10F, it's all really pretty much the same. I dress the same (shirt, windbreaker, jeans, boots, scarf, stocking cap, helmet, two layers of gloves) as I do at -2F as I do at 20F. Anything heavier (like fleece or a thicker coat) will make you sweat too much during the ride. That's worse than being a little chilly. One thing I ...
Riding the train this morning to O'Hare, I read two great articles posted by Tara Hunt on her blog. Tara co-founded and works for Citizen Agency in San Francisco and is an Online Marketing Professional. That stuff is all in her about page, but as I've been subscribed to her blog over the past few days (and creepily following her on Twitter for a while... just kidding), I've come to really enjoy her posts. The two recent posts I'm referencing are Futzing as the Future of Word and The Human Body Teaches Us to Embrace the Chaos. The first is ...
I heard about the Wii Fit when my friend and colleague who writes for Ars Technica wrote about the device at last year's E3. It's basically a new peripheral and "game" for the Wii that helps you work out, tracks your progress, and has a bunch of other fun balance games, watch this video: We talked about the Fit today at work and I think we've resolved to get one, but I think that I'd like to get one for home too. I've heard mumblings about it being release in either January or February, but there's nothing definitive yet.
I'm a casual reader of Om Malik's blog, GigaOM and his other site WebWorkerDaily and I read in my news reader today that he had suffered a heart attack over the holiday break: Happy New Year. As you may have noticed, my byline hasn't been up on the site for a few days. That's because the holidays weren't exactly my most jolly. I had a heart attack on Dec. 28. I was able to walk into the hospital for treatment that night and have been recovering here ever since. With the support of my family and my team, I am ...
