My new job: Project Manager at Condé Nast

I made a post last week that I was going to be ending my employment at Stone Ward, where I've worked for the past two years. It was a really hard decision and I've turned down lots of jobs because I'm great friends with my coworkers and I genuinely loved the job. However, when the opportunity came around to work for another set of friends at a really awesome company like Condé Nast and on an awesome publication like Ars Technica, it was an offer I couldn't turn down. As of Monday, I'm going to be working full time on ...

Ars Technica Review: Practical Django Projects

Just noticed my review has gone up on Ars. Here's a short excerpt: The final, and best, section of this book covers a few topics that have personally revolutionized my understanding and how I think about developing my Django applications. James goes to great lengths to explain the philosophy behind Django’s concept of reusable applications. The idea here is that one should strive to develop small, tightly-focused, and loosely coupled applications (or modules) that can be plugged into any application to add instant functionality. In fact, a large portion of what makes Django such an attractive framework—it's auto-generated admin interface, ...

Review complete: Practical Django Projects

I wrapped up my review of Practical Django Projects for Ars Technica tonight. Its good to finally get that out the door. Its still going through editing, copy writing, and all that good stuff, but I hope it might go up tomorrow. I'll be sure to link it here.

WWDC: San Francisco was a success

Jacuqi and I just got back from a whirlwind trip to San Francisco to cover Apple's WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) for Ars Technica! We spent most of our time talking to iPhone and Mac programmers, covering Steve Jobs' keynote address to the attendees and press, and going to the cool parties that are thrown. Just like we did in January at MacWorld, we threw a party at Harlot on 54 Minna. We had an open bar and teamed up with Gizmodo again to throw a really awesome party. In my opinion, it was one of the best of all ...

It's true: Condé Nast buys Ars Technica

There's really not much to say at this point, but you should probably read Ken Fisher's complete post about the acquisition on the front page of Ars: Ars Technica is now focused on increasing its coverage by bringing more experts onboard to full out our technical mojo. We're going to get broader, but also more in-depth, in areas of IT and science. We are going to be opening offices in San Francisco and Chicago in a matter of weeks, and we are rearranging our editorial team slightly, with Jon Stokes now running Reviews and Features as Deputy Editor, while Eric ...

Macworld 2008 Predictions, how did I do?

You might remember that a few weeks ago, I made some predictions about the Macworld 2008 conference & expo we covered last week, here are the results: Movie Rentals: +1, this was the most likely to happen, everyone got this one right New Macbook: +1, also very likely, but the specific details were not pinned down until a day or two immediately prior to the keynote. Of course, we got the MacBook Air. More information about the iPhone SDK: +0, technically, this came true. Steve mentioned it on stage, confirmed the February ship date, but didn't really give us and ...

Goodbye San Francisco!

It was a great, if not busy & tiring, week in my second favorite city in the world. Here's the week by the numbers: Parties thrown: 1 Number of minutes it took to suck down $1300 worth of booze: 30 Number of people who attended: 500+ Number of times someone made a joke about being a PC in reference to my wearing a tie: 10+ Number of parties attended: 2 or 3, depending on what you consider a party Number of announcements from Steve: There were 4 things, not 5 Dollars it costs to buy two people lunch at Moscone: ...

Day three of Macworld, whole week, almost done

At this point, I would like nothing more than to go home! This full week conference stuff really drags on a person. Here's a link to the roundup of our second day's coverage, if you're interested. I also donated some buckage to the EFF and got this cool shirt and hat. Looking forward to chilling with the cats by Saturday!

Sup? Macworld is a blast. So is Devo.

Check out my roundup of our first day's Macworld coverage. We went to the Microsoft pre-Macworld bash party last night. It was fun and we met some really cool developers from the Mac Business Unit. Then we took a shuttle to the Macworld bash. Devo was playing. DEVO. These guys are old by now, but they can still rock! You don't think Devo can rock? You're badly misinformed! Today was another crazy day of running around, pounding out stories, and meeting cool people. We had a really fantastic lunch with Brian Lam and his girlfriend Lisa at hotel whose name ...

Macworld 08 thus far

We're almost through with the second day of the Macworld expo and I'm already getting burned out. But in a good way ;) Last night we threw our big party) and it was a huge success! Over 500 people showed up for a party we'd originally estimated to draw around 100. The place was packed and filled full of really cool people. We gave away a lot of software, Ars swag, and had tons of fun. Unfortunately I couldn't drink a drop because I needed to wake up so early this morning. We set the alarm for 5:55am and got ...

Bits and bobbles before Macworld

Things have been moving extremely quickly in our run up to the week of Macworld over the past few days. Because I have so little time, I am proceeding to engage in a massive brain dump. In no specific order, here we go: I've secured a G4 Powerbook to use next week from our good friend Adam Received the Eye-Fi and discovered that it is extremely close to being able to perform the tasks I wished, but falls oh so short. I'll talk about those in an upcoming article on the device on Infinite Loop. Besides not being able to ...

Ain't nothin but a Macworld party, y'all

So check this. Jacqui and me are leaving the frozen wasteland of Chicago and touching down in delightful San Francisco this next weekend and we're unleashing an awesome party on the conference-goers and Ars-faithful in town: Come early to get free schwag, meet fellow Ars and Gizmodo readers, the Landed Gentry of Mac Development™, and of course, Jacqui and me! Oh, and the drink/food tab will probably run out within an hour, so get there at 8PM! Schwag? Ars pins, stickers, sumos, t-shirts, books!!
