Wired magazine covers, then and now

So I've had a mint copy of one of my favorite Wired magazine issues (5.06 from June 1997) laying around forever. Just recently, Wired released an updated version (16.04 from April 2008) which I thought was super clever:

Steve Jobs Is Your New Bicycle killed the meme

My stupid little site got a lot of linkage. The first big site to link was Violet Blue's TinyNibbles.com (NSFW). I emailed Violet a screen grab of what I considered to be one of the funnier lines I wrote, "Steve Jobs Told Katie Cotton That You're Rude," because it was specifically about her (Violet's) experience with Steve Jobs on the floor of Macworld. That got a lot of people linking to the site on Pownce, Twitter, and elsewhere. Yesterday Eric Zorn, a technology blogger at the Chicago Tribune, emailed me with a series of questions about. His article on the ...

Incompatible

I really, really like this photo I took this afternoon of that MacBook's 60W adapter plugged into the MacBook Air. I was attempting to show why it wouldn't work too well. This picture doesn't illustrate that very well, but the photo is really nice!

Revolutionary iPhone ideas: Apple take note

Let me stream internet radio to my iPhone over WiFi. I can't tell you how awesome this would be. I don't want to have to capture Groove Salad over night to a big ol' MP3 and listen to it throughout the day. I want live radio! NPR, cool college stations, it would be extremely cool. When my iPhone is attached to my computer, I should be able to send and receive text messages (SMS) via some method. Address book used to do this (I think) with phones connected via Bluetooth. Why not build this functionality into iChat? Or expose it ...

Ditched T-Mobile, got an iPhone

As you may have already heard, Jacqui lost her phone during perhaps the most important week of her professional career. As a journalist covering Apple stuff, you need to be in nearly constant communication during the Macworld Expo! After asking all over Moscone in various lost and found stations, we gave up and used this as a catalyst to finally dump T-Mobile and make the jump to AT&T. And of course we couldn't go to AT&T without buying some iPhones, right? With the updates made during the conference itself, multiple SMS' for one, many of the barriers that had been ...

Macworld 2008 Predictions, how did I do?

You might remember that a few weeks ago, I made some predictions about the Macworld 2008 conference & expo we covered last week, here are the results: Movie Rentals: +1, this was the most likely to happen, everyone got this one right New Macbook: +1, also very likely, but the specific details were not pinned down until a day or two immediately prior to the keynote. Of course, we got the MacBook Air. More information about the iPhone SDK: +0, technically, this came true. Steve mentioned it on stage, confirmed the February ship date, but didn't really give us and ...

Goodbye San Francisco!

It was a great, if not busy & tiring, week in my second favorite city in the world. Here's the week by the numbers: Parties thrown: 1 Number of minutes it took to suck down $1300 worth of booze: 30 Number of people who attended: 500+ Number of times someone made a joke about being a PC in reference to my wearing a tie: 10+ Number of parties attended: 2 or 3, depending on what you consider a party Number of announcements from Steve: There were 4 things, not 5 Dollars it costs to buy two people lunch at Moscone: ...

Day three of Macworld, whole week, almost done

At this point, I would like nothing more than to go home! This full week conference stuff really drags on a person. Here's a link to the roundup of our second day's coverage, if you're interested. I also donated some buckage to the EFF and got this cool shirt and hat. Looking forward to chilling with the cats by Saturday!

Sup? Macworld is a blast. So is Devo.

Check out my roundup of our first day's Macworld coverage. We went to the Microsoft pre-Macworld bash party last night. It was fun and we met some really cool developers from the Mac Business Unit. Then we took a shuttle to the Macworld bash. Devo was playing. DEVO. These guys are old by now, but they can still rock! You don't think Devo can rock? You're badly misinformed! Today was another crazy day of running around, pounding out stories, and meeting cool people. We had a really fantastic lunch with Brian Lam and his girlfriend Lisa at hotel whose name ...

Macworld 08 thus far

We're almost through with the second day of the Macworld expo and I'm already getting burned out. But in a good way ;) Last night we threw our big party) and it was a huge success! Over 500 people showed up for a party we'd originally estimated to draw around 100. The place was packed and filled full of really cool people. We gave away a lot of software, Ars swag, and had tons of fun. Unfortunately I couldn't drink a drop because I needed to wake up so early this morning. We set the alarm for 5:55am and got ...

Bits and bobbles before Macworld

Things have been moving extremely quickly in our run up to the week of Macworld over the past few days. Because I have so little time, I am proceeding to engage in a massive brain dump. In no specific order, here we go: I've secured a G4 Powerbook to use next week from our good friend Adam Received the Eye-Fi and discovered that it is extremely close to being able to perform the tasks I wished, but falls oh so short. I'll talk about those in an upcoming article on the device on Infinite Loop. Besides not being able to ...

Ain't nothin but a Macworld party, y'all

So check this. Jacqui and me are leaving the frozen wasteland of Chicago and touching down in delightful San Francisco this next weekend and we're unleashing an awesome party on the conference-goers and Ars-faithful in town: Come early to get free schwag, meet fellow Ars and Gizmodo readers, the Landed Gentry of Mac Development™, and of course, Jacqui and me! Oh, and the drink/food tab will probably run out within an hour, so get there at 8PM! Schwag? Ars pins, stickers, sumos, t-shirts, books!!

Apple dominates CES

Last year, Macworld and CES were booked over the same week in January. Quite unfortunate. Does anyone even remember what happened at CES last year? The iPhone, Apple TV, and a slew of other Apple products hit the ground and blew away anything that was being discussed in Las Vegas. Well this year, Apple barely had to try. Macworld is next week, and as you know, Apple announced minor, incremental updates to their pro-line. Result? News of CES is swept away on the blogs (that is, if you count TechMeme as an accurate portrayal of what's being talked about). Heck, ...

New Mac Pros & Xserve ahead of Macworld

I made my predictions a few days ago. I postulated that it was possible that both the Xserve and Mac Pro would gets bumps during the keynote. I'm pleased to see, however, that Apple quietly pushed these updates a week ahead of the good stuff. This means that the keynote itself has much more berth for new announcements, yay! On the Mac Pro: The new processors have a 1600MHz frontside bus and 800MHz memory, so that means speedy renderings for you. Oh, and it comes standard with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT along with PCI Express 2.0 slots. If ...

Macworld Predictions

I saw this headline pop up in my reader and it reminded me that me and Jacqui have been trading our own MacWorld predictions back and forth between each other for the past few weeks. Since we'll both be in attendance live blogging the keynote and covering the floor during the week of MacWorld, I thought I'd make my own predictions prior to reading Ryan's post. Movie rentals from iTunes. This has been talked to death in the press, Jacqui got the news a while before it hit the mainstream press and Ars covered this here. It's pretty much a ...
