Processing salt →
Jim is right of course.   All too often people jump to the conclusion that “salt is bad” because you often hear about these things where doctors tell people with heart conditions to cut back on their salt intake and where the average American ingests an amazing amount of salt each day. What you don’t hear usually is that this insane amount of salt comes via processed foods...

INTERVALS 2010
It’s been a little warm this week so we decided to go to the gym and run intervals to get our speeds up! You might remember last year when I used intervals to get up to running 5k at 5mph.  I started with twelve 400m sprints with 30sec breaks in between.  I slowly increased the distance per sprint until I was able to run the whole 5k at 5mph.  I kept improving too and I ran my best 5k at...

cider = apple + homebrew + chef + rvm →
Looks to be good if you want to jump head first into working with the new hotness but don’t want to spend an hour (or more!) getting it all setup: Dev Ops proponent Corey Donohoe has brewed up a strong Apple development environment based on rvm, homebrew, and chef. If you have XCode installed, running a simple bootstrap script will load up your ~/Developer folder and give you: mysql  ...

Cul-de-sacs are the worst →
The theory behind cul-de-sacs was that they lessened traffic, since they change the primary function of local streets — rather than offering a way to get anywhere, now they simply provide access to private residences. Sounds great, right? Wrong! …this design inherently encourages car use, even for the shortest trips. It also limits the growth of communities and transportation options. They...

Kindle/iPad: Hot Zones →
I think this is one of the reasons I find it stressful to read on the Kindle (besides that I like to read on my sun-drenched deck and I find it distracting that there’s all these other fun things I could do on the iPad. I have something wrong with my brain in that I obsessively touch the screen of the device I’m using.  I brush away the smallest specks of dust or a hair or just to...

Witnesses Say Driver Tried To Run Over Bicyclist →
I hope that the judge orders her not only to never be able to drive a car again, but be forced to ride a bicycle everywhere once she gets out of prison for attempted vehicular homicide, fleeing the scene of a crime, et cetera: She hit him with her car, backed up, and went after him again. That’s how a local bicyclist describes what happened to him when he got into an argument with a woman on...

This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard: He was able to board the plane because he made his reservation on the way to the airport and it takes time to check flight manifests against no-fly lists, a law enforcement official said Tuesday. How long can it possibly take to check this guy’s info against a list?  More than 60 minutes? That’s undoubtedly the very least amount of time...

I find this more than a little troubling: FBI Deputy Director John Pistole said that Shahzad was on the federal “no fly” list, which helped Customs and Border Protection agents to arrest him. So uh, how exactly did this dude get to be about 5 minutes from flying out of the country?  He made it through ticketing, security, customs and got onto the plane and the plane had pushed back...

Mad About Apple →
I posted a link to a post here yesterday and it seems like a lot of people were confused. You’ve seen those ridiculous and over-the-top comments people leave on articles about Apple? The ones where people claim to be outaged and incensed and fuming over a corporation and their products? Well they are also hilarious and so this is a tumblr that seeks to curate the best and most ridiculous...
