Broken trains and words in brains (train update)
Ever since my career change and move to Chicago I find myself with 45 minutes on either side of my work day where I’m not doing much besides sitting (more often I’m standing) on a brown line train. It didn’t take me long to figure out a way of making the time pass faster. I hadn’t done any real substantial reading in the past 5 years or so, so I decided I would download some audiobooks from...
Ironic Sans: Interview: Seetharaman Narayanan
By now, you either recognize the name, or you’re wondering who Seetharaman Narayanan is, and the difference probably depends on what you do for a living. If, like me, you have a job where you launch Photoshop on a daily basis, then maybe, like me, you can’t stop staring at this guy’s name on the Splash Screen every time it launches. Seetharaman Narayanan. It’s hard to look away. Sure, other...
Notice anything?

T-Mobile top bidder as 3G auction ends
T-Mobile is playing catch-up against bigger carriers in introducing 3G services. Its bidding company, T-Mobile License LLC, had the winning bids on 120 licenses and will pay almost $4.2 billion for its spectrum. All told, the licenses it won could reach almost 475 million people, a number greater than the U.S. population. There was a wide variety of licenses up for auction, ranging from local to...
TECH Cocktail
TECH Cocktail 2 is coming up next month:
Just like TECH cocktail 1 (watch video) this event is free and open to the public with complimentary beer (thanks to Coastr) and is sponsored by midPhase hosting. However, unlike our first event there will also be a cash bar offered – yes you can order a martini if you like! We hope that you join us for an evening of fun mingling with other technology...
Fetch free album artwork from the iTunes Store
I adapted a perl script written by Jesper at printf.dk to Python. It lets you pull down Album Artwork (free) from the new iTunes Store.
Here’s the [script]:
Have fun!
Did I mention?
Jacqui and I went to the most recent Chicago Python Users Group (ChiPy) meeting with 49 other Python enthusiasts. The really cool part? It was at Google’s offices downtown!
It was a really cool place and they bought a bunch of really awesome pizza. There was some stuff about Python too, I think ;)
It's a celebration, bitches!
The nasty nati
We went to Cincinnati this weekend to finish cleaning up the old apartment and turn in the keys. After we did all that, we went out and partied with our Cincinnati pals at the ol’ watering hold: Buffalos!
Selected pictures from the night follow. The whole set is on Flickr.

C4: A Mac Developer Conference in Chicago
Jonathan “Wolf” Renstchz has put together a developer conference here in Chicago that’s going to take place at the end of next month. I really don’t have an interest in Mac development per se, but I’m into development in general and I think a lot of the people in attendance are cool guys who are a big part of the “Mac community” I’m a part of.
I’m also not up for dropping a few hundred bucks...
Verifying MD5 checksums on a Mac
Neil Turner gives a method for determining the md5 hash of a file on OS X:
openssl md5 [filename]
Here’s another way:
md5 [filename]
I think the second is quicker :) The first is more flexible as you can specify ‘sha1’ instead of ‘md5’ and get the SHA1 hash.
Ar-kansas
Yep. Here I am in Little Rock for my job. I made it safe and sound from Midway to St. Louis to LR. I’ll be here for a while. I can’t wait to get back to Chicago though, I really want to live some more in our new place :)
We’ve actually been without gas (and as a result, hot water) since we moved in. Taking showers have never been such a production or exercise in courage. So right after I...
My hatred of bears is realized. Oh, and data...
I never mentioned this, because I didn’t think it was a big deal, but right before we left Cincinnati, my 200GB external drive on my iMac died. Big time. I think I caught the [Herschell Taghap data loss virus]. The result was that all my iTunes library, iPhoto library and some miscellaneous other stuff was all lost. I even tried that crazy trick where you freeze the hard drive. No dice.

So... we moved
