Category feeds are now in effect, comment twittering

I’ve been adding features to my blog as I’ve wanted them. Since I wrote this whole thing in Django, it’s been fun, enlightening, and helpful to go through this process. I was already pretty good with Django prior, but the experience of building this site and adding on new features almost every day have really tightened up my skills and depth of knowledge of the framework.

Two interesting things I’ve added in the past few days are:

Site sends a Twitter direct message when someone leaves a comment.

This is really cool and has already been helpful. I get a tweet to myself along with a tinyurl link to the post in question. Some have wondered why I just didn’t create a RSS feed for comments. My response is that I really like to use Twitter for these types of notifications, and it works across all my devices, wherever I am. I don’t always have access to an RSS reader, but 99% of the time I can check my direct messages on Twitter. I just hope that the Akismet comment filtering I added will hold up when the comment spammers arrive! Technical notes, I accomplished this using a little Twitter library I already maintain for running the Ars Technica twitter account and tied it into the same function that spam checks & emails me about new comments (it uses signals).
Category Feeds

The core of this blog is build off a nice & simple package developed by Nathan Borror called django-basic-blog. It provides a lot of boilerplate (models, views, templates, managers, feeds, tags) for creating a simple blog in Django. One thing is doesn’t provide out of the box is a way to generate category specific feeds. Why would you want those? Well some people don’t like the nerdy stuff I post and only want to read about my Life Updates, now there’s a feed for that! Check out all the categories and their feeds on this page.

Things I still would like to add? Trackback support, which I think I can “borrow” from another popular Django blogging application. This one is tricky because there are two parts to the trackback process. One is sending a trackback to sites you mention. The other is receiving trackbacks from sites who mention you.

Tweeting on new posts. This one sounds easy, given that I already have a twitter library installed. However, to use signals for this, I have to attach to either the post_save or pre_save signals when a Post object is created. These signals are called both when a new item is created, and when an old item is updated. Furthermore, I’ll need to determine not only if the post is a new object, but whether it is published/draft, and if it’s publishing date is prior to the current time.

Gravatars. These are the cute little icons provided by the Automattic company of the same name. Unfortunately, Gravatars are keyed off of an individual’s email address and Django’s built-in Free Comment system (the one I’m using on this site), that allows comments without having to login, doesn’t currently support an email or URL field. I could theoretically extend the default models, but I’m lazy. I’ll probably end up doing it though, so keep a lookout!

Note: These comments are filtered through Akismet and are subject to moderation. Your post may not show up immediately if the system deems you sufficiently spammy :)

I’d definitely be interested in hearing about extending the FreeComment model. The lack of those fields was the primary thing stopping me from using FreeComments on my code - I was playing around with a hacked version of the django comment package, but I of course lose the benefit of any future updates.

How would extending those fields affect using the django comment package template tags, etc? I am most likely wrong on this, but I assume it would just ignore them entirely. Would you then need to hack the template tags as well?

Those reasons you bring up are the biggest things keeping me from trying this so far. But I’m almost motivated enough to try it ;)

But the lazy guy in the back of my mind keeps reminding me that someone is supposed to already be working on refactoring the whole thing for newforms and with my luck it’ll be released about five days after I finish my modifications ;)
